Choosing A Salmon Fishing Rod
from: Kyle BesserIt is important to choose the right salmon fishing rod based on the type of salmon fishing that you plan to do. There are two basic types of salmon fishing rods including a salmon fly fishing rod and a spinner or salmon fishing bait rod. Each type of salmon fishing rod will have a different type of salmon fishing reel associated with the particular type of salmon fishing rod.
There are some salmon fishing rods on the market that are advertised as being dual purpose salmon fishing rods. Dual purpose salmon fishing rods may be appropriate for some anglers, but typically more experienced fishermen will prefer to have two specialized salmon fishing rods rather than a combination salmon fishing rod.
Salmon Fly Fishing Rods
Salmon fly fishing rods are longer, more flexible and typically not as heavy through the butt and handle than salmon fishing bait rods. It is always advisable to purchase a double handed salmon fly fishing rods to allow casting with both hands or either hand. double handed salmon fly fishing rods are perfect for the heavier salmon fishing lines and salmon fishing reels needed for going after the large sized salmon.
Typically salmon fly fishing rods will be 10 to 15 feet in length, which gives additional height to the casting action when wading into deeper waters or salmon fishing from a boat. Children, women and shorter men should choose salmon fishing rods under 12 feet. Taller men and those salmon fishing in large waterways may wish to move to a 14 or 15 foot salmon fishing rod.
The salmon fishing rod, regardless of its length, should be flexible and bend the length of the salmon fishing rod and then snap very quickly back into place, making casting accuracy possible. Good salmon fishing fly rods will be fairly slender to eliminate wind resistance but will also be heavy enough to withstand the fight of a 10-30 pound salmon.
Salmon Fishing Bait Rods
Salmon fishing bait rods are designed to have a sturdy butt end to allow optimum control of the fish as it fights in the water. Medium to heavy salmon fishing bait rods are required for larger fish. Heavy salmon fishing bait rods are the salmon fishing bait rods of choice for using downriggers and trolling in boat salmon fishing.
Salmon fishing bait rods need to be heavy in construction but still sensitive enough to let the angler feel the fish at the end of the bait. Keep in mind that the longer the salmon fishing bait rods or spinner rods, the heavier it will be. Graphite is typically used in the construction of salmon fishing rods, but other compounds such as e-glass may also be used to increase the flexibility while not compromising on the strength.
In addition to the salmon fishing bait rod itself, the handle of the salmon fishing bait rod must be comfortable to grip, even in the cold water that often accompanies the salmon fishing seasons. The salmon fishing bait rod guides should be smooth and centered and made of a rust proof material such as aluminum oxide. Remember that the pull of the fish against the salmon fishing line will be directly applied to the salmon fishing bait rod guides, so construction of this important part of the salmon fishing bait rods is critical to landing the fish.
