Equipment Used For Fishing

from: Rob Lore

The sport of angling has been with us since before the dawn of recorded history. It is very therapeutic to sit by a lake on a cool spring morning and wait for the fish to bite and also that it is a source of food is probably the reason we enjoy fishing so much. Although the fundamentals of fishing remain the same, the equipment used for fishing has been re-invented and improved many times throughout the history on fishing equipment.

The history on fishing equipment started out with a sturdy stick, a long cord, and a baited hook. The idea has remained the same, yet the equipment used for fishing has become vast in variety and improved to maximize efficiency. Sturdier, more refined wood poles were made. Materials like bamboo were and are still often used for non-reel fishing poles. The fishing pole didn't undergo a major change until the invention of the fishing reel.

The history on fishing equipment really expanced with the invention of the fishing reel. The invention of the fishing reel would change most of the history on fishing equipment used for fishing forever. Soon after the invention of the fishing reel, many fishing poles were equipped with shoddy brass reels that worked sluggish and were high maintenance. Over the years, fishing reels became more and more refined, letting the angler catch bigger and better fish.

If the fishing pole was going to keep up, new materials would have to be used to produce better durability. Eventually, the fishing rod began to undergo changes. Specifically, the use of composite materials such as fiberglass and carbon fiber enabled fishing poles to withstand more and more weight. The next advancement in the history on fishing equipment used for fishing would be the improvement of the fishing reel to a smooth flowing, open face reel.

Not only did the advancements of fishing rod and reel change the history on fishing equipment used for fishing, but the tackle used to lure fish changed too. For standard live bait fishing, the bobber and sinker are key. Although the sinker hasn't changed much in the history on fishing equipment used for fishing, bobbers are now usually made from Styrofoam or hollow plastic rather than cork. Fishiing lures came into being with the availability to reel in the line. Since then, an assortment of jigs, replicated worms and crayfish, and replicated baitfish come in a colorful and vast variety of shapes and sizes.

The invention of the fishing lure is possibly the biggest change in the history on fishing equipment used for fishing. Since the only method of attracting fish before the lure was live bait, the invention of the fishing lure opened a whole new set of possibilities for the angler. Without fishing lures, the tackle box would be filled with nothing more than spare hooks, bobbers and sinkers.

The spirit of fishing will always remain the same, but advancements in equipment used for fishing will continue in years ahead. There will always be new equipment used for fishing, but the art of angling will remain a love shared around the world.
